La Filanda presents a project room dedicated to Berlinde De Bruyckere, developed in collaboration with Galleria Continua. For years, the artist has pursued a research practice focused on matter—its transformations and its capacity to reveal, through form, the traces of time and the processes that shape it. Her work brings together organic and industrial elements, resulting in sculptures that retain a strong physical presence while inhabiting a suspended dimension.
Nijvel I, presented for the first time in Veneto, originates from a direct encounter with spaces dedicated to leather processing in the areas of Anderlecht and Nijvel. The stratifications, folds, and rigidities of its surface carry the imprint of those environments: not as symbolic references, but as the concrete memory of places, gestures, and technical procedures that have left their mark on the work’s form.
Presenting the piece at La Filanda situates it within a context that shares a similar material history, establishing a dialogue between the artist’s research and one of Europe’s most significant tanning traditions. The work is hosted within the Camera format—an essential space designed to focus attention on a single sculpture, encouraging a slower mode of observation, allowing viewers to dwell on what the form reveals when it is truly observed, rather than simply seen.
